Reflections on Sound Design

Critique: The modes of sound used in this are rather clear.  The casual setting is obvious because of the school setting.  You can hear kids in the background and see them in front of you, it is a feeling everyone has had.  Getting on the bus is not a problem but it seems the bus driver has one.  He makes weird movements that are caught on sound and this makes it semantic and realistic.  You can hear the shoes clicking against Ms. Vaughn's heal as she walks up the bus steps.  The director used his space well too, the two main characters talking are bigger then the rest, they also are much louder, giving them more attention.  The movement in this scene is simple so the sounds were easily retrievable.  You get quite and emotional response to the vulgarity of the bus driver.  He is fat and loud making him quite obnoxious.  The dialoge is directionally spoken from person to person and it is easy to hear.  The loudest comments are made by the bus driver because he is a very funny character.  From the hair to the double chin this character is hilarious in many ways.  The semantic noises he makes create a familiar yet whacky environment fo the viewer.

Finding Your Howl

Summary: In one of Flaum's stories he references a tiger that is locked up in a cage.  The tiger had many amazing abilities, but could not use them because he could not get out and be free.  As the tiger uses his jumping ability he can get out of his cage, but finds himself locked up now in the cage that was next to him.  The cages are infinite and he has no way out it seems.  This represents many common struggles in our lives and that we must realize we will never overcome.  As the tiger will never get out of the cage, sometimes we need to let go of things we care about as well, knowing not everything always works out.

ALL
I do not like green eggs and ham
I do not like them, Sam-I-am
Do not like them here or there
I do not like them anywhere.
Not in a house, not with a mouse
Not here or there, not anywhere
I do not like green eggs and ham
I do not like them, Sam-I-am
Could you? Would you? With a goat?
Could you? Would you? On a boat?
Could you? Would you? In the rain?
Could you? Would you? On a train?
Not with a goat. Not on a boat.
Not in the rain. Not on a train.
Not in a house. Not with a mouse.
Oh, no!
Not in a box. Not with a fox.
Not in a tree. You let me be!
I do not like green eggs and ham!
I do not like them, Sam-I-am!
(All take their bows)
I do not like green eggs and ham!

Essay: So what is this malicious change the incorrigible Sam-I-Am is trying to establish? He wants the old curmudgeon to eat green eggs and ham. This is a ludicrous request.  After all, anyone who has ever had the displeasure of cleaning out a refrigerator knows that when eggs and ham turn green that it is not a good thing.  This has only happened to me once. You certainly do not eat them; you throw them out.  But Sam-I-Am is not throwing them out. He has embraced them and has come to love them and is now trying to persuade others to include green eggs and ham in their daily routine. The other character refuses to have anything to do with it, though and tries to turn away from Sam. Sam does not back off, though, and we find ourselves with sixty-two pages of adventure as Sam chases the curmudgeon desperately trying to find any situation that the older creature would be willing to try this new idea.  Finally the curmudgeon, chased into a pond and fed up, gives in to the relentless requests and tries the insane concoction with the stern warning that he will not like them only to discover that not only does he like them, he loves them! He would eat them anywhere and everywhere. He would eat them with any other kind of creature, suddenly the idea of eating with a fox or in a box does not seem so ludicrous.  Now, imagine the green eggs and ham were not green eggs and ham, but a friendship with a black man, and imagine that the fox is not a fox, but an American Indian and that the box is actually a Japanese home. Would the older generation be willing to try these things, absolutely not.  This is where we realize that my generation is a bit more advanced then our fathers and mothers.  This happens every generation, this does on only relate to me but to everyone.  Sam and the youth movement were confident that the world would be a better place if all of these cultures could come together. They relentlessly pressed the issue: through sit-ins and love-ins, through protests, through setting examples, and through persistent public discourse.  Racism in the south was prevalent in the 18th and 19th century so now even not being said people realize there is tension between races.  This does not have to happen but it is what is known, or common knowledge.  As each generation passes the realization that race is not a factor has been increasing fast.  This is good because it brings us closer to a more peaceful world.  I relate myself to that because I believe that all wars are based off of money and greed, which derives from hate.  Whether this is from racism or companies battling, you can relate it to how negative the character was to the green eggs and ham.   Green eggs and ham are gross but thats not how we should  judge our peers (Off of color). speak out!

Deconstructing Characters: Hero

Color:  The hues used for this character were green brown and blue, these colors are analogous aside from brown.  This character is the super hero so the brighter colors make it obvious that this character is good, his name is Reverend Recyclo.  The emotion you get from looking at this character is that he is kind and very environmental.  His goal is too save the Earth and this is obvious because of his color scheme.  The green outline of the character really makes him pop off of the page.  This is Dr. Smog's arch nemesis and they clash perfectly because of the environmentalist vs. pollution.
Lighting:  Reverend Recyclo has light directing on his face and it is a powerful beam.  This is because he is the hero in charge and is ready to save the day.  Ironically enough he is a tree and needs light to survive so it is like the sun is always shining down on him as it should be.  The shadow beneath him is large as well because it shows how strong and massive this super her actually is.
Shape:  From looking at this hero you can see an obvious rectangle as the body shape.  This shows the strength this character has.  A rectangle is a sign for power and mass.  This shape is not and aggressive one but shows how he is in power and has bark textures all over him.  This stance he is in represents him well because he is a tall stable rectangle with the long arms to reach his enemy.  The spikes of wood on his head are triangles to bring his enemies fear and to use as a weapon.

Deconstructing Characters: Villain

Color: Orange and Red were the two hues that I selected for my antagonist Dr. Smog.  These colors are analogous on the color scheme.  The two colors combine create a scary, evil, dark look for the character that fits him perfectly. The emotion that is given out from this character is fear and sadness, he is not a nice guy clearly, and has evil powers.  The combination of the black makes him have a very dark look that is overwhelming for most viewers.  Like the sun, these colors show a lot of energy which is given off by Dr. Smog, many people should fear this villan because if they don't he will coming to attack their environment soon.
Light: The light portrayed on this character is coming from above him and lightly behind.  This shows some kind of dark power, because he is in the light but not for a good reason.  It is as if he is about to attack and if the super hero does not some soon the earth with surely collapse under his power.  This villan prefers the darker areas where he can remain under cover, but is ready to attack at any moment.  You can se his full outline but you really do not know what he will do next because of his dark surroundings.
Shape: The shape of this character is triangular.  This is a very powerful shape, that shows his strength and power.  He can be arrow dynamic when he fights and fly quickly with the triangular build.  His wings are triangular along with his torso.  The emotion you get from these shapes are scary because of how strong he looks, and the mean colors coming off of him.  Do not mess with Dr. Smog because he will not lose.  The triangles represent this character well because it shows his demeanor and stance against all.

Spiderman 3 Trailor

Spiderman

The reason Spiderman is one of my all time favorite super heroes is because of his sick suit that he wears.  The latex with the blue red and black clashing together looks really awesome.  I like spiderman when he is saving people and swinging on his web from building to building.
